Unforgettable Places

Many Military Brats lived overseas and were fortunate to visit places only read about in books by most U.S. citizens. Other Military Brats lived on posts and bases within the U.S., but lived in very different parts of the coutry.

While life on base was essentially the same from installation to installation, the local terrain, towns and cities near the bases varied.

For many Military Brats, it is that which is just outside the main gate which is so different from the routine sights and sounds inside the fences that is so appealing while growing up, and so unforgettable.

A Military Brat in Karlsruhe Germany

In the summer of 1960 my Father received orders for a tour of duty in Germany. Our home for the past three years had been the town of Stillwater Oklahoma. Dad was an Army captain in the Engineer Corps who had been one of just a few active-duty personnel assigned to an Army Reserve unit. I had no idea how living in Karlsruhe Germany would be so different from living in the United States of America.

AFRC Vacation Time - Part 2

The other AFRC resort we visited back in the 1970s was in Garmisch, again in the German Alps. This time, however, we went in the springtime. I guess it must have been back in '76.

AFRC Vacation Time - Part 1

One of the things I remember about our time in Germany was going to stay in the AFRC (Armed Forces Recreation Center) resorts. These were for the use of military personnel and their dependents and gave them a chance to have a vacation away from their home bases that didn't cost too much. The main ones our family went to were the big resorts in the Bavarian Alps, in Garmisch and in Berchtesgaden.

Visiting small Germany towns and castle climbing, of course!
