I lived in Germany in the 1970s where my father was based. We lived in Hanau, later in Bad Kissingen. I attended elementary school in Hanau and Bad Kissingen and Junior High in Schweinfurt. It was a great place to grow up. I now live in Aberdeen, Scotland.

The other AFRC resort we visited back in the 1970s was in Garmisch, again in the German Alps. This time, however, we went in the springtime. I guess it must have been back in '76.

AFRC Vacation Time - Part 1

One of the things I remember about our time in Germany was going to stay in the AFRC (Armed Forces Recreation Center) resorts. These were for the use of military personnel and their dependents and gave them a chance to have a vacation away from their home bases that didn't cost too much. The main ones our family went to were the big resorts in the Bavarian Alps, in Garmisch and in Berchtesgaden.

Food—on and off-base

I was a growing teenager when I lived in Germany, so I needed food, and lots of it! I still have some fond memories of my time in Germany involving food. Where to begin? How about the base snack bar. Cheap, basic food maybe, but it sure tasted good.
