My father was a World War II veteran and then career Air Force. As a child I lived in Japan, India, England, as well as the U.S.
I married a career military man, so my kids are Military Brats, and my eldest son was a Marine. My grandfather also served in World War II . . . so my family has three generations of military service.

Remember the song by Malvina Reynolds with the words: "Little boxes on the hillside, little boxes made of ticky tacky, little boxes on the hillside, little boxes just the same." Military Brats know all about those "little boxes."

In this article, Judy shares more of her childhood in India.
Living overseas and experiencing different cultures was a big part of the Military Brat experience. Judy shares her memories of Japan.
After spending several years overseas, culture shock when returning to the United States is a given.
"Most of the places we lived overseas we lived on the economy before moving on base. The one exception was Japan. We went to Japan in 1948, not long after the war, and dependents were not allowed to accompany the men there. We had to wait for a house on the base. Dad went 8 months before us. It took that long to get a house."
The Cold War Years had a big impact on many of us Military Brats in the 1950s
to late 1980s
I suppose the experience depended on where you
lived. I lived during those years at Keesler Air Force Base four
different times, India, England twice, and the Azores.
Now that it has
been de-classified, it is okay to say that what we were doing in India
was spying on the Chinese and Russians—that was in the early
fifties. Since I was a child, I had no idea at the time. My dad
never talked about his job at home.
"Our trips to and from India were marathons . . . with many stops along the way, but the experiences were well worth it."
